“It’s Going To Be Really Fun”
June 27, 2008
It was my first day of summer school. This girl approached me out of nowhere and started talking to me. Oh boy…
She started asking me questions. Long story short, she invited me to a party. It was just the way she asked me that was funny. After investigating my background, she proceeded to talk about the party. It went something like this… I kid you not. I didn’t even get a chance to speak. She talks like a chipmunk. Very fast, very loud. Actually, she reminds me of someone I know…
“Yeah, so, umm… we’re going to be having a party this weekend. It’d be cool if you could come. There’s going to be a lot of food and music and a lot of people are going. It’s a good way for people to network. Yeah, so you should come. Umm… it starts at 12 and it’ll end at 3. And it’s going to be really fun. A lot of people are going. So, you should go. Yeah, umm… Are you doing anything this weekend? If not, you should go. We’ll have a lot of good food and good music. It’s going to be totally awesome. Do you want to give me your name and number?”
I just wanted her to stop talking, and I didn’t think that a simple “no” would stop her, so I just gave her my name and number and she said she’d call me back. I didn’t think she would. A couple days later, I was with my brother and my dad. My dad was getting his car repaired so while I was waiting in the car with my brother, the chipmunk girl called again.
“Hi, this is ( Chipmunk Girl’s Name). How are you? Yeah, so I was wondering if you have time this weekend? We’re having another party. It’s from 12 to 3. It’s going to be really awesome. You should come and check it out. We’re going to have a lot of food and good music. Yeah, a lot of people are going. You should go. Umm, I mean, it’s a good way to network and meet new people. There’s going a lot of people at the party. And there’s going to be a lot of good food and music. So, yeah. You should come. What are you doing this weekend?”
Look, Chipmunk Girl. Stop annoying me! Why do you have to be so nosy? Of course, I didn’t say that to her. I just told her I didn’t know what I had to do this weekend and that I had to look at my schedule. Obviously, I didn’t have anything to do. I just wanted to enjoy my free time. I told her I’d get back to her. So, after a few more days passed, I thought the whole ordeal was over. Then, lightning struck again. She called me just before I was about to play tennis.
“Hi, is this Winston? Oh hi, this is (Chipmunk Girl’s name). How are you? So, I just wanted to tell you there’s a party this weekend. Yeah, you should really go. It’s going to be so awesome. There’s going to be a lot of good food and good music. This band is going to be playing there. Yeah, you should go. It’s from 12 to 3. What are you doing this Sunday? Are you able to get off your job?”
“Uh… I don’t have a job”. I don’t know where she got that from, but anyway…
“Oh, okay, then. Well, you should go because there’s going to be a lot of food and good music and it’s going to be awesome. What are you doing this weeke-”
I stopped her right there.
“Umm, yeah, so… You know, I’m not actually very interested in going. Yeaahhhh.”
Then she lost that chipper tone she had. I could tell she lost interest and she gave me a quick good-bye. Then, I thought… “That’s all it took???” A simple “I’m not interested” and it worked like a charm. Oh my goodness. I had to endure all that crap and all I could have said was “no”. Someone smack me.
